CHEVROLET COLORADO – the hunk of trucks

General Motors (USA) is on a successful spree by marketing the Chevrolet Colorado as well as its counterpart, the GMC Canyon. Pickup trucks have a huge market in America and successfully superseded the Chevrolet S-10 as well as the GMC Sonoma compact pickup trucks. The history of the Colorado takes us back to 2004 when the first generation of these pickups drove to fame.

The Chevrolet Colorado was designed by General Motor’s North American operations division, General Motor’s Brazil operations and Isuzu that was involved in the designing process and later started designing and selling its own pickup trucks.

The Colorado offered both manual and automatic transmissions as well as rear and four wheel drive options along with standard, extended, and four-door crew cab body styles. The initial models came with 2.8 L LK5 14 engines as a standard but there were more powerful models with the Z 71 package that were available with the four-door variants. Later, these packages were dropped paving way to the LT2 and LT3.

During 2007, the Colorado underwent a facelift and a new engine upgrade, the new models has the 2.9 L LLV 14 as well as the 3.7L LLR 15 engines that were introduced as a solution to the ongoing head problem. There were new color options available too. A few colors were Deep Ruby, Pace Blue and Imperial Blue as well as a new set of tires and new wheels. The LT and LTZ models have minor changes incorporated in them and the Colorado badge was also phased out from the Vehicle’s doors in favor of General Motor’s new and official corporate logo.
The 2009 Colorado underwent another facelift and had a 5.3 L LH8 V8i and produced 300 Horse power, the internal changes on the engine were the only prominent changes, there weren’t any other noteworthy changes.

Trouble for Colorado:

Although this is a very successful model and has around 30,000 trucks pre-ordered, this has exceeded GM’s expectations. However, the problem persists with the delivery issues. General Motors have stopped delivery orders for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado because the airbags on the driver’s side have been allegedly wired incorrectly and various vehicles produced has been affected.

According to the statement from GM, the problem, “affects the vehicles’ two-stage airbag system by reversing the deployment sequence and disrupting the deployment timing of the driver airbag stages.” That simply means, in an accident the bag may not work correctly.

The affected trucks are still on GM’s assembly line, they are in transit or unsold at the dealers across America. The company is figuring out a way to repair this problem and the existing units sold shall also be taken care of.

Albeit the minor problems that persist with the safety on this truck, the Chevrolet Colorado 2015 retains its pride as one of the most trust worthy pickup truck in America along with the Canyon and is certainly a great deal breaker for the mid size pickup truck.
