The Art Of Metalworking – 2015 Kawasaki Vulcan

First time biker and you really don’t mind hitting the roads? Speed isn’t a concern and neither is the price?

Vulcan is the name of Kawasaki’s custom or cruiser bikes. These bikes have been around since 1984 and they’ve ranged from 125 cc to 2053 cc. These bikes are spectacular and powerful. A rare combination found in bikes these days.

Picking a new bike is not unlike trying on a new pair of shoes, and it is here that the all-new Kawasaki Vulcan S Ergo-Fit concept provides a fresh approach to those looking for a fantastic and powerful bike. More so, you would love the Vulcan because it gets your customized touch to it.

Kawasaki has always been known for building some of the sturdiest bikes in the market and the company didn’t pull any punches telling the world that the Vulcan S was designed to a be a stable road runner for riders of varying sizes. That’s quite an interesting concept that sounds pretty revolutionary.

Ergo-Fit Centers:

Most Kawasaki dealers have signed on as Ergo-Fit Centers, which allows prospective buyers to mix and match dealer-installed seat, footpeg, and handlebar options at time of purchase for no additional cost. The Vulcan’s forward-mounted pegs offer a trio of mounting points spanning a three-inch range, an alteration that requires an appropriate length shift rod. Likewise, three sculpted seats are available, in reduced-, mid-, or extended-reach form. Additionally, the pullback-style handlebar comes in two flavors, a mid-reach design and a reduced-reach bar that places the grips 1.4 inches closer to the rider.

Vulcan has been a mainstay of Japanese cruisers for decades. It combines the precise engineering Kawasaki is known for with a modern style that can’t be beat. Perhaps one of the best beginner cruisers available right now is the Vulcan type S. Imagine the looks of the Harley V-rod at less than half the price. Now that is bound to get some attention!

The all-new Vulcan from Kawasaki comes powered by a liquid-cooled 649 cc parallel twin engine that is derived from the Ninja 650. This is a fuel-injected DOHC eight-valve motor with revised cam profiles, plus a modified intake tract, exhaust, and ECU. These changes, along with a 28 percent increase in flywheel mass, have resulted in improved low- and mid-range response and smoother overall operation. The power delivery of this bike is very linear.

The Vulcan from Kawasaki is everything you’d want in a cruiser, at least as far as its design goes. All the elements of a tried-and-true cruiser are there. From the teardrop-shaped fuel tank to the inverted triangular headlights and the wide handlebars, the Vulcan S is a cruiser in every sense of the word. But the thing about the Vulcan that really stands out is its capability to be customized depending on the rider. Yeah, bikes aren’t as easily customizable as cars so having this feature is definitely a huge god-gift. The color options are pretty limited, but that shouldn’t be a problem because Kawasaki did the smart thing by offering three distinct color styles. There’s the flashy one (Candy Lime Green), the sleek, classy one (Flat Ebony), and the clean one (Pearl Crystal White). You’d definitely fall flat for any of these 3 colors.

The Vulcan S has a sporty character that is complimented by a nimble chassis and a uber-cool neutral steering. It has a tubular frame and a single lay-down KYB shock that offers 3.2 inches of wheel. It also has well-damped 41 mm conventional fork that is kicked out at 31 degrees of rake and offers 4.7 inches of stability. The ABD-equipped Vulcan has a phenomenal braking ability. The single 300mm rotor/twin-piston Nissin front combo is forgiving, having subtle initial bite but plenty of power when a handful is applied. The front tire tracked well when braking hard over rough surfaces, with surprisingly little ABS interaction. The rear anti-lock cycled quite readily, doing an excellent job of keeping the rear in line even when stomping the pedal mid-turn.


In terms of Pricing, the Vulcan is relatively affordable off-shore. It carries an aggressive price tag of  $ 6,999 (Roughly around Rs. 4.5 lakhs) for the standard trim and $ 7,399 for the ABS model (Roughly around Rs. 4.75 lakhs)

However, in India the onwards price is Rs. 6,00,000/- (Sad but true!)

Any purchase of either of these two trims comes with a 12-month limited warranty with an option to avail of Kawasaki’s Protection Plus warranty.

Kawasaki offers 3-different seating options:

  • The standard seat for people 5’7″ to 6 foot
  • The ‘Extended Reach‘ seat which lets you slide back in the saddle a bit more and raise you up.
  • The shorter seat which is about 2 inches shorter than standard in the tapered section.

This makes it comfortable for any kind of rider to enjoy a long and hassle-free ride.



Bottom Line:

This bike is quite sexy and modern for a cruiser. It has 27.8 Inch seat height that makes it ideal for short rides. It also has Ergo-Fit customization that is best for all sorts of riders from 5’6” to 6’ 1” height. On the downside, this bike comes with a parallel twin instead of a v-twin that might not meet the likes of every rider. Overall, this is an excellent ride under 700 cc.
